Essaouira, Between History and Horizon
With its golden ramparts, blue shutters swaying in the sea breeze, and lively narrow streets, Essaouira offers an immediate sense of calm and authenticity. Yet behind this gentle atmosphere lies a rich and fascinating history.
Known in ancient times as Mogador, the city was already a strategic stop for Phoenician traders as early as the seventh century BCE. Over the centuries, it welcomed Romans, Portuguese, and various Arab and Berber dynasties, each leaving a lasting imprint. In the eighteenth century, its destiny changed when Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdallah decided to create a modern Atlantic port that would connect Morocco to the world. He entrusted the design of the city to a French engineer, Théodore Cornut, a former student of Vauban, the celebrated military architect of Louis XIV.
Cornut conceived a fortified city with a geometric layout, inspired by European cities but thoughtfully adapted to the Moroccan landscape. The result was a harmonious and well-structured town where architectural elegance met the local spirit. The name "Essaouira" comes from the Arabic "Al-Souwira," meaning "the well-designed" or "beautifully planned," a tribute to the balance and clarity of its layout.
The city quickly became a thriving commercial hub where Jews, Muslims, and Christians lived and traded together. Goods such as spices, textiles, ivory, and handcrafted items passed through its port, linking Morocco to Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and beyond. This blend of cultures and commerce shaped Essaouira into a truly cosmopolitan city with a deep openness to the world.
Today, Essaouira continues to embody that spirit of openness. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of animated streets, artisan workshops, small galleries, and welcoming cafés. The city draws artists, musicians, travelers seeking inspiration, and sea lovers looking for calm and connection. The Atlantic wind, once essential for trade, now attracts surfers and kitesurfers from around the globe.
